START WITH ART: Ski Jacket

Welcome/welcome back! We're starting our day by examining "Ski Jacket" pictured below. Take a look at the artwork then read the questions to the students/children in your life and see how starting your day with art can ignite creativity and critical thinking!

Title: Ski Jacket

Artist: Peter Doig

Date: 1994

Medium: Oil paint on 2 canvases

Dimensions: right: 295.3 × 160.4 mm; left: 295.0 × 190.0 cm

Start with Art Questions:

  • Take a close look at the painting and describe what you see. Do you see the skiers?
  • How does the size of the trees at the center. of the painting compare to the size of the skiers? Why do you think the artist elected to make the trees so large and the skiers so small?
  • This painting is made up of two parts (called a diptych). At the join, the two parts mirror each other, though inexactly. Do you like the symmetry? How do you think this symmetry contributes to the overall look and feel of the painting?
